CEC 24 Says 2011-2012 School Year is a Success

At its first meeting, the Community Education Council 24 (CEC 24) announced that schools within the district have seen an improvement in their English Language Arts (ELA) and Math exam scores in the 2011-2012 school year. In addition to improved test scores, the council announced that as many as 318 eighth grade students were accepted into specialized high schools.

“We have many teachers to thank for that,” said Madeline Taub- Chan of the CEC 24 council. “This stuff doesn’t happen overnight,” she added.
The report suggests that in the 2011-2012 school year, each subgroup within grades 5, 7, and 8 improved their ELA exam scores and overall, all schools within District 24 saw an improvement. The subgroups are divided into four racial categories: Caucasian, African-American, Asian and Hispanic.

Students with disabilities in the district have also seen an improvement in their ELA exam scores. Taub- Chan was thrilled to announce that children with special needs in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 have all improved their English scores.

The results on the district’s math exam scores also reflected a successful school year for District 24. Students in grades 3-8 demonstrated higher results than last year and scores for all subgroups in grades 4 and 8 went up.

Students with disabilities also saw an improvement in their math scores for the 2011-2012 school year. Taub-Chan was proud to say that all of those students, grades 3-8, had higher results than in the 2010-2011 school year. “This is a great accomplishment,” she said.

The wonderful news that students improved their ELA and math scores was followed by the announcement that 318 eighth graders were accepted into specialized high schools. Among those students, 66 were accepted into Bronx High School of Science, 88 were accepted into Brooklyn Technical High School and 56 were accepted into Stuyvesant High School.
