The Greater Woodhaven Development Corporation (GWDC) hosted their annual Wonderful Woodhaven Street Festival on Sunday, October 14.

For six hours on a sunny, Sunday afternoon, the festival took up several blocks on Jamaica Avenue, starting at Woodhaven Boulevard and ending on 80th Street.

The fest featured delicious food, rides for children and music from local cover bands as residents and visitors enjoyed walking through the event. Local businesses, which serves as the backbone of Jamaica Avenue, also got to promote themselves in hopes that people would shop in the stores that do business on the major thoroughfare.

The street festival had several sponsors including The Forum, Queens County Savings Bank and The New York Mets.

It also featured appearances by the elected officials, State Senator Joe Addabbo, Councilman Eric Ulrich, Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley and Assemblyman Mike Miller, who represent the area. They all thanked Maria Thomson, the president of GWDC for organizing the festival and encouraged people to support their local businesses and spend money on Jamaica Avenue.

Elite Taekwondo also had a martial arts demonstration during the street festival. They were one of many businesses based on Woodhaven Boulevard that got to promote their establishment in hopes that they can get people to continue shopping on the boulevard. Forum Newsgroup photo by Luis Gronda.
