The firehouse of FDNY Engine Company 268/Hook and Ladder 137 on Beach 116th Street in Rockaway Park was this week included in the Landmarks Preservation Commission approval of five late 19th and early 20th century firehouses as city landmarks.
The FDNY has called each of these houses their home for more than a century.
Other newly landmarked houses include Brooklyn’s Engine Company 228 in Sunset Park and Engine Company 240/Battalion 48 in Windsor Terrace; the Bronx’s Engine Company 46/Hook and Ladder 17 in Bathgate and Engine Company 73/Hook and Ladder 42 in Longwood.
In total, 337 FDNY firehouses are now officially landmarked. Thirty-two of them are still in operation.
