Howard Beach Residents Concerned With Spike in Crime, request additional police coverage in area

Howard Beach residents are calling for swift police action after news of a carjacking at gunpoint on 159th Avenue around 10:30 p.m. this past Tuesday night.

Concerned homeowners in the area say that police presence is needed in the community, normally considered to be among the safest neighborhoods in Queens.

Police are investigating the incident but presently have no leads. After receiving several calls to the newspaper concerning the incident, The Forum has learned from sources at the 106th precinct that additional police will be dispatched to the area in light of the demonstrated need for coverage there.

A department representative explained that precincts follow standard police protocol in the assignment of personnel. The source said that police resources at any precinct are assigned to the areas where they are required at the time. “People in Howard Beach have reported that there are problems, and they will be seeing an increased police presence there effective immediately,” the source said.

Please see this week’s issue of The Forum for an updated report on the situation.
