The advances in veterinary medicine have come at a rapid rate over the last several years. One such advancement is the use of laser therapy.

Laser therapy uses light energy of a certain wavelength to treat a wide variety of animal conditions. It has its applications in almost all aspects of Veterinary Medicine, from surgery to outpatient management.

Decades of research, clinical trials and laboratory testing have demonstrated the beneficial effects of laser.  It is FDA approved and becoming more and more available to pet owners and their beloved animal companions.

One of the best-known applications of laser is its relief of pain.  Laser light targets only diseased or damaged tissue and stimulates complex chemical pathways at the cellular level, which enable the cells to heal at an accelerated rate. This in turn decreases redness, swelling and inflammation. As this is accomplished the pain an animal feel is markedly decreased.

It also stimulates the production of endorphins, which contribute to analgesia, and an overall feeling of well-being.

Among the many benefits of laser therapy is faster wound healing, reduced scar formation, and improved nerve function.

Perhaps most important for pet owners is that laser is painless, safe, has no known side effects and sedation is not necessary.

Treatment times vary, but are usually accomplished within the confines of a regularly scheduled office appointment.

Laser therapy is in its infancy. It will be exciting to see its progression as more and more applications available.
