The Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society will present a slideshow of old pictures of Woodhaven at Neir’s Tavern and Steakhouse at 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21st. The 180-year old tavern, located at 87-48 78th St. in Woodhaven, is a perfect location for such a presentation, according to Ed Wendell, President of the Historical Society.
“Generations of Woodhaven residents have enjoyed themselves at Neir’s Tavern, going back to the mid-1800s, when it was directly across the street from the Union Course Racetrack,” Wendell said. “It seems fitting to celebrate the history of this community in this space.”
In addition to the slideshow, attendees will be encouraged to participate in a pub quiz with the winner walking away with a copy of Vincent Seyfried’s “The History of Woodhaven and Ozone Park.”
This is the second evening event for the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society, following up a very well-received presentation entitled “Queens: Then & Now” in February by Queens historian Jason D. Antos.
Neir’s Tavern & Steakhouse has a menu that includes the “Goodfellas” burger and the “Tower Heist” sandwich, named after two films that shot scenes in this historic location. There is no entrance fee for this event and participants are encouraged to eat during the presentation. “It will be a casual event,” Wendell said. “We want everyone to come out, have fun, and learn a little about the history of our community.”
