Members of the ROTC that operates out of Franklin K. Lane’s Educational Campus in Woodhaven constructed the American Legion Post 118’s annual Garden of Remembrance last weekend.
For more than half a century, the post has been setting out markers for each member of the post who is no longer with us in time for Memorial Day.
Creating the garden became too physically demanding for the membership, and in 2007 a new tradition was born when the task was handed over to Franklin K. Lane’s ROTC under the guidance of Sgt. Major David Valentin.
The American Legion will hold its annual Memorial Day service on Monday, May 26th starting at 10:30 a.m. There will be a ceremony at the Garden of Remembrance, and afterwards everyone will be invited inside for refreshments. American Legion Post 118 is located at 89-02 91st St. in Woodhaven.
There will also be a “Thank You to our Veterans” barbecue at the American Legion arranged by the Woodhaven Residents’ Block Association on Flag Day, Saturday June 14th starting at 12 p.m. Refreshments will be served and there will be a flag day presentation by local students of St. Thomas the Apostle.
