A Far Rockaway man was sentenced last week to seven years in prison for attempting to set on fire the lover of the mother of his three children.
Stephan Schlackman, 46, was convicted in July of attempted murder, attempted arson and reckless endangerment. Just before midnight on May 9, 2011, Schlackman placed a gasoline-filled container at the home of Brian Sherman-Brown on Beach 25th Street in Far Rockaway, according to trial testimony. He was caught in the act and confronted by the victim and his roommate, Taryl Jackson. The three individuals struggled and Schlackman ran away from the scene after being injured, authorities said.
Justice James Griffin last Thursday sentenced Schlackman to seven years for attempted murder, five years for attempted arson and one to three years for reckless endangerment, all to be served concurrently.
“The defendant, in an apparent fit of rage, attempted to kill his romantic rival by setting him on fire,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said. “According to trial testimony, the defendant filled a large plastic bin with gasoline, placed it at the victim’s door and attempted to light it. The defendant was tried and convicted and has now been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for his actions.”
