In an effort to memorialize two slain city police officers and show continued support for the NYPD, the Howard Beach-Lindenwood Civic and Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder (D-Ozone Park) on Monday posted large blue ribbons along Cross Bay Boulevard.
The ribbons have become a somber symbol of a city mourning the deaths of Police Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, who were ambushed and gunned down in Brooklyn on Dec. 20 by a crazed assailant who took his own life immediately after the attack.
“We should support the people on the front lines that protect us every day,” said civic President Joann Ariola, noting that a lot of law enforcement personnel reside in the area. “This is also a way to bind the community together for a good cause.”
Goldfeder added, “There’s been so much rhetoric that has divided our communities. I think it’s important to show support for the brave men and women who support and protect us.”
