Calling it “an unusually busy morning” on Thursday at the security checkpoints at John F. Kennedy International Airport, the Transportation Security Administration announced that TSA officers detected two guns in the handbags of two women in unrelated incidents—both before 7:15 a.m.
A woman from upstate Chatham, NY, was stopped by authorities after the TSA officer who was staffing the checkpoint X-ray machine detected a .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun in the woman’s handbag. According to the TSA, the woman claimed that she forgot that she had her gun with her.
The woman was arrested by Port Authority Police and faces weapons charges.
In the second incident, a Brooklyn woman was caught by TSA officers with a CO2-powered BB gun in her bag. Port Authority Police were notified and she was issued a summons.
Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the security checkpoint, said a TSA spokeswoman. Weapons—including firearms, firearm parts and ammunition—are not permitted in carry-on bags, but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline.
