Flushing Man Pleads Guilty in Stepmother Beating

A Flushing man last week pleaded guilty in the brutal attack on his elderly stepmother, leaving her blind in her right eye and with only blurry vision in her left eye, according to Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

Wang Shun, 33, pleaded guilty last Wednesday to first-degree assault. Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard Buchter indicated that he will sentence Shun to nine years in prison on April 10.

According to the charges, Shun moved into the victim’s home upon his arrival from China in 2008. On Sept. 12, 2013, Shun and his father got into an argument shortly after midnight. Shun then approached his stepmother, who was in bed, and asked her for money. When she refused, Shun began to punch the 87-year-old woman repeatedly in the face.

According to court records, Shun’s stepmother was left bloody and bruised, with both of her eyes swollen shut. Now 89, she remains completely sightless in her right eye even after surgery and the vision in her left eye is limited to blurry images.

Brown said, “The defendant has admitted to viciously beating his 87-year-old stepmother… This was a troubling and senseless crime and deserving of the significant punishment to be imposed by the court.”
