The Metropolitan Transportation Authority this week closed the Brooklyn-bound Rockaway Boulevard station on the Liberty Avenue A line for renewal work that is expected to last until this fall.
The Rockaway Boulevard stop is part of an ongoing $39 million capital project at five stations along the A line in Ozone Park: 80th Street-Hudson Street, 88th Street-Boyd Avenue, Rockaway Boulevard, 104th Street-Oxford Avenue and 111th Street-Greenwood Avenue.
For these 100-year-old stations, the improvements include the installation of new lighting, better platforms, enhanced safety features, and upgraded communications; and will create better travel conditions for customers, according to New York City Transit.
Renewal work at the 104th Street-Oxford Avenue and 88th Street-Boyd Avenue stations was completed between May 2014 and February 2015. And the Queens-bound platform of the Rockaway Boulevard station was renewed between February 2015 and May 2015.
Ongoing station renewal work at Rockaway Boulevard, according to the agency, will consist of replacement of mezzanine to platform stairs, mezzanine floors, doors and windows, and interior and exterior walls. The station will be painted and canopies, windscreen panels and railings will also be replaced. The station will also feature new lighting in the mezzanines and new artwork.
The construction contracts were awarded in December 2013 as a joint venture to Forte Construction Corp and Emis Construction Group.
For service from this station, take a Far Rockaway-bound A to Aqueduct-North Conduit, or an Ozone Park-Lefferts Boulevard- bound A to 104th Street and transfer to a Brooklyn-bound A. Normal A service will be provided travelling towards Queens and the Rockaways.
