Less than a week after hosting the Howard Beach Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk to Cure Diabetes, the Ave Maria Catholic Academy schoolyard last Thursday anchored AMCA’s inaugural Spirit Day celebration.
All students—Kindergarten through 8th Grade—enjoyed 16 events organized by teachers and support staff, including classics such as Tug of War, milk bottle knock down, beanbag target, potato sack race, and ring toss. Most games took advantage of the sun-splashed schoolyard, while some were played a few feet away in the gym.
“We wanted to have an end-of-the-year, fun-filled event outside,” said Principal Marybeth McManus, adding that “it went great, very well organized.”
McManus said that she and her staff also wanted to use the day to expose the students to some recently purchased gym equipment.
John-Anthony Ferrante, a 4th-grader from Howard Beach, said he “had a great time” with all the games, but milk bottle knock down was his favorite.
Michael Davies, 13, noted that he enjoyed all the sporting events—volleyball, basketball free-throw contest—but Tug of War was definitely his favorite event.
Why?
“Because it tests your strength,” the precocious 7th-grader deadpanned.
McManus indicated that Spirit Day—like Mr. Davies—will be back again next year.
