The Howard-Beach Lindenwood Civic on Tuesday held their final meeting prior to the summer break, but not before updating the community on public safety and the organization’s annual Wish List for July and August.
While the Select Bus Service presentation (see: cover story) garnered the lion’s share of meeting minutes and attention, Capt. John Ganley, executive officer of the 106th Precinct, briefly detailed the latest crime statistics and some arrests of interest.
The command enjoyed a 50 percent drop in overall crime over the past week, with grand larceny and felony assault the only offenses that increased. Most of the assault cases have been closed, Ganley noted, while identity theft—a major problem in the 106 for some time—once again sparked the jump in larceny complaints.
Additionally, Ganley highlighted two important burglary arrests including that of repeat offender and frequent Forum presence Keith Kolm, who was picked up by the Police Department’s Auto Larceny Division in the 113th Precinct. The case is connected to the April burglary of the Key Food supermarket on Cross Bay Boulevard in which an automated teller machine was stolen. Ganley said Kolm was collared because he allegedly swiped the truck used in the burglary out of John F. Kennedy International Airport.
And Joseph Borelli was recently arrested by Nassau County authorities in connection with nine commercial burglaries—totaling more than $200,000 in losses—with many allegedly committed in the 106.
This year’s summer Wish List, civic President Joann Ariola noted, includes continuing to put pressure on elected officials and DOT for Lindenwood road repairs; and more beautification efforts in the community.
