A Bayside father, left to care for his infant son while his wife went to work has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and assault charges in the death of the four-month-old who died in December 2014.

Jagsheer Singh, 28, of Brian Crescent in Bayside, battered his son about the head causing skull fractures as well as widespread brain injury. The baby died after being hospitalized for multiple severe skull fractures and brain injuries resulting from lack of oxygen and retinal hemorrhages.

District Attorney Brown said, “As a father, the defendant’s job was to protect and nurture his helpless, innocent son. Instead, the defendant assaulted his son, causing skull fractures and widespread brain injury and ultimately resulting in the child’s death. As a result, the sentence to be imposed by the court is more than warranted.”

Singh pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault. He will be sentenced on Nov. 4 to an indeterminate term of 5 to 15 years in prison on the manslaughter charge and a determinate term of 18 years in prison on the assault charge. The sentences will be served concurrently.

According to the charges, Dr. Reena Malhotra, a radiologist at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, left her four-month-old son, Nevin Janduher, with her husband and the baby’s father, Jagsheer Singh, when she left for work at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Friday, December 19, 2014.

The following morning the baby was observed to be unresponsive and having difficulty breathing and was taken first to Flushing Hospital Medical Center and then transferred to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where an examination revealed that the baby suffered multiple severe skull fractures, widespread brain injury resulting from lack of oxygen and retinal hemorrhages. The baby died several days later.

In pleading guilty to the manslaughter and assault charges, Singh admitted using an object to inflict injuries on his son.
