A 22-year-old Far Rockaway man was sentenced to 20 years in prison following a jury conviction on manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon charges in connection with the 2012 shooting death of a man who had just exited the subway.

“The defendant has been found guilty by a jury of his peers in the shooting death of a 21-year-old young man,” said Queens District Attorney Richard Brown. “This was a brutal and senseless act of violence. The victim was shot multiple times. As such, the imposition of a lengthy prison term is more than warranted.”

Diamonte Alexander on June 29 was convicted convicted of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a week-long jury trial.

According to trial testimony, Alexander encountered 21-year-old Peren Phillippe exiting the subway with a friend in Far Rockaway. Shots rang out as Phillippe, a father-to-be who had recently been accepted to college, was walking with the friend toward the intersection of 44th  Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Phillippe was shot in the lower back, the back of his thigh and in his foot. The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died. The defendant was seen running from the scene immediately after the shooting and was spotted by police a few blocks away. The police chased Alexander and recovered a firearm he tossed under a garbage dumpster nearby.
