A South Floral Park man has been convicted of murder and weapon charges in the fatal shooting of his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend inside a Jamaica motel in June 2010.

Max Cagan, 52, has been convicted of second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon following a three-week jury trial. Held without bail since his arrest in June 2010, Cagan is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 22. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison, which will be served concurrent to the more than 100 years he is presently serving in federal prison following his conviction in the robberies of seven New Jersey businesses and the shooting of a Wayne, NJ, police officer.

“The defendant and his accomplice cold bloodily set up the victim by luring him to a Queens motel and then shooting him in the face, killing him. This act of violence clearly demonstrates that the defendant is a danger to society and warrants a lengthy prison sentence in order to protect all law-abiding people,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.According to trial testimony, the victim, Edwin Vega Quinones was lured to the Par Central Motor Inn on Parsons Avenue in Jamaica on June 5, 2010, by Arlene Molina, Cagan’s girlfriend, in order to extract revenge for a recent assault allegedly committed by Quinones on Molina. While in the room with Quinones, Molina allowed Cagan to gain entry to the room, whereupon Cagan fatally shot Quinones once in the face with a 9mm handgun. Following the shooting, Cagan and Molina fled to New Jersey, where they were apprehended. Molina pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter on May 4, 2011, and was sentenced the following month to 20 years in prison.
