A father from Bayside has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after he pleaded guilty last month to manslaughter and assault charges in the death of his four-month-old son. He infant died after he suffered multiple skull fractures and other injuries.

Jagsheer Singh, 30, was left to care for his son on the evening of December 19, 2014, when his wife, Dr. Reena Malhotra, went to work at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where she works as a radiologist.

District Attorney Brown called the sentence by the court “more than warranted,” noting that instead of caring for his son and nurturing him, he chose instead to assault the baby causing widespread brain injury which ultimately caused his death.

On October 22, Singh pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and first-degree assault before Queens Supreme Court Justice Richard L. Buchter. At that time, he admitted using an object to inflict injuries on his son. Last week, Justice Buchter sentenced Singh to an indeterminate term of 5 to 15 years in prison on the manslaughter charge and a concurrent determinate term of 18 years in prison on the assault charge.

According to the charges, four-month-old Nevin Jandu, was left in the care of his father, Singh, on the evening of December 19, 2014.

The following morning the baby was observed to be unresponsive and having difficulty breathing and was taken first to Flushing Hospital Medical Center and then transferred to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where an examination revealed that the baby suffered multiple severe skull fractures, widespread brain injury resulting from lack of oxygen and retinal hemorrhages. The baby died several days later.
