A former Astoria resident has been sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for the 1992 murder of a 23-year-old friend. James Pacheco, 44, formerly of 40-08 10th Street in Astoria, pleaded guilty on October 13, 2016, to second-degree murder and was subsequently sentenced to and indeterminate sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
Criminal charges and court papers say that, on August 26, 1992, Pacheco shot the victim, William Pabon Figueroa, 23, twice in the back of the head in the fifth floor hallway of 41-11 10 Street. After the shooting, Pacheco went to the victim’s 10th Street residence and stole a bag containing $5000 that belonged to Mr. Figueroa. In 2012, Pacheco, who is serving a prison sentence of life without parole in Florida on unrelated murder and burglary charges, wrote a letter confessing his guilt in the Figueroa homicide.
