The City Fire Department on Saturday celebrated its 152nd anniversary with an afternoon of open houses across the five boroughs.
More than 200 firehouses and emergency medical service stations opened their doors to the public to allow residents “to learn more about the life-saving work of the FDNY,” the department said.
Throughout the day, firefighters, paramedics and EMTs educated New Yorkers about fire and life safety, conducted demonstrations, discussed careers with the Bravest, and offered tours of FDNY engines, ladder trucks, and ambulances. FDNY members also gave away thousands of items, including fire-safety coloring books and fire helmets for children. The annual event began in 2015, when the department marked 150 years of serving the city.
“For a century and a half, FDNY members have risked their lives bravely protecting life and property in our city—an enduring commitment steeped in pride and tradition,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro.
