Fifteen planters populated with myriad blossoms and perennials will be installed along Woodhaven Boulevard between 86th Road and 88th Avenue, City Councilman Eric Ulrich announced Monday.

Funded by Ulrich, the $40,000 beautification project is expected to be completed by the end of the week, with the first planters having already been placed near 86th Road. The councilman indicated that he has also allocated $20,000 to expand the Woodhaven Business Improvement District’s maintenance operations to include the new planters over the next year. The Queens Botanical Garden will also water and provide regular care for the new plantings, Ulrich noted Monday morning at the 86th Road site.

“These planters are not only going to add aesthetic beauty to the community, but also play a larger role in the revitalization and the improvement of the overall quality of life in Woodhaven,” the councilman added.

Each of the 15 planters boast: Yucca Color Guards; Dwarf Manchurian Lilacs; Cherry Laurel Otto Luykens; Red stemmed Dogwoods; and Juniper Blue Stars. Additional perennials include: Liriope Big Blues; Sedum Stonecrop Autumn Joys; Huechera Americana; Lady’s Mantles; Creeping Jennies; and Geraniums.

Ulrich pointed out that the planters are part of a larger effort to help attract more residents and customers to the South Queens commercial corridor. This past year, the City Department of Transportation continued installing new pedestrian lighting along Jamaica Avenue. The agency has completed the first phase of the street-lighting project, which includes new LED World’s Fair pedestrian lights at locations between 91st Street and Woodhaven Boulevard. The next phase calls for upgraded lighting on the avenue from Forest Parkway to 109th Street.
