City officials this week discovered at least 50 migrants living in cramped conditions in the basement of a South Richmond Hill furniture store.
Sarr’s Wholesale Furniture on Liberty Avenue was raided in a coordinated effort by the City Fire, Police, and Buildings departments. According to a FOX 5 report, inspectors said the “living quarters” had no ventilation, natural light or enough space for the people sleeping there.

Inspectors noted that the illegally converted basement had no ventilation, natural light or enough space for the people sleeping there.
Officials also found illegal plumbing work. The DOB issued a full vacate order for the first floor and the cellar due to severe overcrowding and hazardous fire conditions.
“I am deeply disturbed by the reports of the illegal conversion site discovered in my district, where dozens of individuals were living in deplorable conditions,” State Sen. Joe Addabbo, Jr. (D-Woodhaven) said in a statement. “It is unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to such overcrowded, unsafe, and inhumane living conditions. The exploitation of vulnerable migrants for cheap labor and housing is reprehensible and goes against our values as a society. Every individual deserves to be treated with dignity and respect, and it is the responsibility of building owners and authorities to ensure that proper living standards are maintained. I commend the efforts of the NYC Department of Buildings and the FDNY for investigating this matter and taking action. We must hold accountable those responsible for this egregious violation of housing and labor laws. In addition, we need a greater and more robust assistance from the federal government. I urge all New Yorkers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or unsafe living conditions in their communities. We must work together to protect the rights and well-being of all individuals. Our focus should be on providing support and assistance to those in need, rather than exploiting them for personal gain. Let us stand together against such exploitation and ensure that justice is served for those affected by this appalling situation.”
