A veteran City cop was murdered in cold blood early Wednesday morning in the Bronx as she sat in a marked department vehicle with her partner, according to NYPD officials.
Police Officer Miosotis Familia, 48, sustained a single gunshot wound to the head when assailant Alexander Bonds, 34, fired through the mobile command unit’s window shortly after midnight.
Familia’s partner, who was unharmed, immediately radioed for assistance, Police Commissioner Jim O’Neill said.
“Shots fired!” the officer screamed into the radio, according to a New York Daily News report. “I need a f—ing bus! 10-85 10-85! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! My partner’s shot! Hurry up central!”
According to O’Neill, an NYPD Anti-Crime team consisting of a sergeant and a police officer, who were in uniform, encountered Bonds running on Morris Avenue, approximately one block from the scene of the shooting. As they confronted him, he drew a revolver. The officers fired at him, striking and killing him. A silver revolver was recovered at the scene.
Familia, a mother of three, was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital. She succumbed to her injury around 3:30 a.m.
“#NYPD PO Miosotis Familia has been assassinated in an unprovoked attack on cops assigned to keep NYers safe,” O’Neill tweeted. “Keep her family in your prayers.”
Bonds, according to the News, was an ex-convict on parole at the time of the shooting. He was paroled in 2013 after serving seven years upstate for robbery.
Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said Familia “gave her life protecting a neighborhood that had been plagued by gang gun violence. Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform everyday and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx. As we mourn her death and support her family, friends and colleagues, we ask for your help. Violence against police officers cannot stand. When you see or hear someone making threats against NYC police officers you need to let us know, you need to be our eyes and ears. Police officer Familia now joins the exclusive ranks of women who have heroically served and died in the line of duty. We will keep her in our hearts and minds as we do all of the women and men who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the city they loved.”
Familia’s murder is eerily similar to the assassinations of Detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in 2014. The partners were ambushed as they sat in their marked vehicle outside a Brooklyn housing development by a crazed gunman in what he characterized on social media as an act of vengeance on behalf of unarmed black men recently killed by cops.
