United States Customs and Border Patrol officers working at John F. Kennedy International Airport inspected a shipment from China last month and discovered 177 counterfeit professional and collegiate sports rings worth an estimated manufacturer suggested retail price of $11.7 million, had they been genuine, CBP officials announced this week.
The seized rings were infringing on the trademarks of Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
According to CBP, the theft of intellectual property and the trade in substandard and often dangerous goods threaten America’s innovation economy and consumer health and safety, and generate proceeds that fund criminal activities and organized crime.
