An elderly woman was killed and three others injured, including two firefighters, late Tuesday night in a ferocious, fast-moving fire that left a Rego Park home devastated.
More than 100 of the City’s Bravest battled the all-hands inferno that broke out around 11 p.m. inside the two-story home on 66th Avenue near Woodhaven Boulevard. They discovered an unresponsive Rosemary Monaco, 86, in the house. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 54-year-old man, believed to be Monaco’s son, was rushed to an area hospital. Two smoke-eaters were treated for minor injuries, according to City Fire Department officials.
“Our units responded within five minutes. They were met with heavy fire on the first and second floor of this private dwelling. They made an aggressive interior attack,” FDNY Deputy Chief Christopher Paolicelli told CBS News.
As of Wednesday afternoon a team of fire marshals were at the home. The investigation is ongoing.
