CB5 Installs Executive Members

Community Board 5 installed new officers at its latest meeting on June 13, although almost all the current officers retained their positions.

Chairman Vincent Arcuri, First Vice Chairman Walter Sanchez, Treasurer Kathy Masi and Secretary Peggy O’Kane were all nominated to retain their positions with no opposition.

Although he was not present, second vice chairman Michael Hetzer had declined a nomination to retain his position.

He was arrested last month on a charge of grand larceny and was absent from the last two monthly meetings.

To replace Hetzer as an executive board member, Dmytro Fedkowskyj, a board member and the Queens representative to the Panel for Educational Policy, was nominated for second vice chairman.

He accepted and was installed as the only accepted nomination.

Board members Pat Grayson, Ted Renz, Fred Haller and John Maier were elected to the executive cabinet as members at large.

Construction Updates

District Manager Gary Giordano reported that repaving on Metropolitan Avenue near St. John Cemetery was coming to an end although it had taken longer than he expected.

The paving was part of a project to install a new sewer line. The area previously had no sewer line because it wasn’t anticipated that an area between two cemeteries would need it.

Consistent flooding along the road when it rained though, led to Community Board 5 and Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley successfully advocating for the installation of one.

Giordano also said the underpass on Cooper Avenue between 74th and 79th streets is on track.

“And the contractor I think is maybe ahead of schedule,” he said.

The contractor is hoping to expedite the project by starting to rebuild the parapet wall opposite the one being worked on now.
