A Westchester man was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon after he attempted to rob the Getty Station at 161st Avenue and Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach.

Police say that 26-year-old Anthony Colavella of Yonkers walked into the gas station shortly before 3 p.m and approached the station attendant with a demand for money. According to the employee, Colavella said “Let’s make this easy, just put the cash in a bag. The worker refused the unarmed would-be robber and instead grabbed for the phone and called 911.

Colavella fled and jumped into his car heading south toward Rockaway. A customer on the station who had seen the goings on followed the suspect and called police to report his whereabouts. Cops from the 106 precinct headed down Cross Bay and caught up with the suspect near the toll plaza. He was apprehended and brought to the precinct.
