Man shot by Masked Assailant in Howard Beach

One man was taken to the hospital after being shot while sitting in his car with a friend in the early morning hours last Friday, Nov.11 at 159th Avenue and 88th Street in Howard Beach, police said.

According to police sources, Luigi Acampora, 28, was sitting with a friend—identified as Shawn Cammarata, 19—in a parked car on the corner of 159th Avenue and 88th Street near PS 207 around 1 a.m. on Nov. 11 when they were approached by an unidentified man wearing a ski mask and a white hooded sweatshirt.

According to a statement Acampora gave to officers at the scene, he was ‘minding his own business’ when the pair was approached by the masked man. He said the suspect then fired several shots into the car—one of which struck him in the torso—before running southbound towards 88th Street.

Police responded to the scene after receiving a 911 call for help at 1:30 a.m. Acampora was subsequently taken to Jamaica Hospital, police said, although hospital officials did not have any record of Acampora arriving at the facility.

When asked whether there was any indication that the incident involved drugs, police sources said that no such evidence was recovered at the scene; however, sources added, the shooting did not appear to be a random act.

Sources also added that neither Acampora nor Cammarata offered police any ideas behind a possible motive for the attack.

The investigation regarding the incident is still ongoing. Anyone with more information is encouraged to call the 106th Precinct at 718-845-2260.
