Woman Struck By Car on Cross Bay Boulevard

A woman was hospitalized Monday after being struck by a car after grocery shopping on Cross Bay Boulevard in Howard Beach.

Emergency medical staff were at the scene around 4 p.m. on Feb. 20 to tend to a woman—whose name was not released—following a
motor vehicle accident.

Witnesses told The Forum that the woman was apparently grocery shopping, as she was seen carrying bags when she walked from the corner of 157th Avenue across Cross Bay Boulevard. As she was crossing the street, the woman was suddenly struck by a car being driven by what
witnesses described as a young man in his 20s, with a woman of the same age and a dog as passengers in the car.

One man, who did not give his name, said that the force with which she was hit had left the windshield of the car badly damaged.

“She looked really bad,” the man said of the victim, who he described as having head injuries.

Another witness, who only identified himself as a longtime resident of Howard Beach, said he had also seen another accident which occurred at the same intersection on Saturday. The man further added that the Cross Bay Boulevard intersection had been a dangerous one to pedestrians for years, pointing to a memorial not far from the Monday accident scene—where another person was killed in an automobile accident years ago.

“They’ve got to do something about [the intersection],” he said. “I don’t know what; they could add cameras maybe to get people to slow down.”

“That would probably have more accidents,” another man nearby argued. “You’d have people slamming on their brakes to stop.”

Officials at the 106th Precinct did not have any more information at press time, aside from confirming that no automobile-related deaths were reported to their precinct recently.
