Mother Sent to Prison for Son’s Death Will Serve Seven Years

Migdalia Veras, a 59-year-old mother has been sentenced to a determinate seven years in prison for causing the death of her 39-year-old son, Rene, last year in their home in Flushing. She has been held without bail since March of 2011.

According to the charges, on the afternoon of March 2, 2011, Rene Veras, 39, who suffered from cerebral palsy and was confined to a wheelchair, approached his mother with a knife and begged her to kill him – something he allegedly had been asking her to do for months.

A verbal argument ensued and Migdalia Veras picked up the knife stabbing her son twice in the chest. She then put a pillow over his face and held it there for at least two minutes.

After killing her son, Migdalia Veras attempted to commit suicide by cutting her wrists and stabbing herself in the chest.

She was transported to New York Hospital Center of Queens for treatment of her self-inflicted wounds.

At the time of her arrest neighbors came forward to say that there had been a history of loud verbal altercations and that the mother and son were always together.

“The sentence imposed today punishes the defendant for her senseless act. Moreover, she must now live with the knowledge that she alone is responsible for her own son’s demise,” said Queens District Attorney Brown. “Hopefully, she will receive the counseling she obviously needs while in prison.”
