Five volunteer fire departments in Queens Council District 32, represented by Councilman Eric Ulrich (R-Howard Beach) were honored for their heroic efforts during and after Super Storm Sandy rocked the areas they serve.

Each of the departments suffered their own losses, to equipment and their home bases, yet they continued their rescue efforts throughout the communities they serve. Efforts to rebuild and restock essential equipment continues and all of the deapertments remain operational despite the fact that they are operating with limited resources.

“Even though this is our job,” said Chief Jonah Cohen of the West Hamilton Beach department, “it’s certainly a wonderful feeling to know that we are appreciated for the work we so love to do.”

Proclamations were awarded to each of the departments at a Stated Meeting of the City Council held on February 27. Councilman Ulrich and Speaker Christine Quinn personally presented the proclamations to the West Hamilton Beach VFD, Broad Channel VFD, Roxbury VFD, Point Breeze VFD and Rockaway Point VFD.

“Honoring these volunteer fire departments is the lease the City Council can do to thank them for their heroism,” said Ulrich. “The role they play in the safety of our communities could never be spoken about enough. Their response to Hurricane Sandy, when time and again they went above and beyond the call of duty, is just further proof of that.
