Cops Charge Man in Hammer Attack Robberies

A 28-year-old man who was wanted for allegedly attacking three victims in the head with a hammer, including a woman in Briarwood, was arrested at a Brooklyn bodega Monday, according to police.

Anthony Coward, who the NYPD said has been arrested more than 30 times before, was nabbed by a group made up of city police officers and U.S. marshals after the NYPD had made Coward’s mug shot public on Sunday.

The alleged perpetrator was charged with robbery in two incidents – a May 4 hammer attack on a man at Brooklyn’s Rockaway Avenue subway station, when Coward allegedly stole the victim’s wallet, and a second attack that same day, when police said he allegedly swiped $140 from a 32-year-old, according to the NYPD.

Coward was also wanted for nabbing a purse from a 26-year-old woman in Briarwood in March, but he has not yet been charged with that crime, officials said.
