Wielding paintbrushes and a sense of community pride, a crowd of volunteers on Saturday set their sights on wiping unsightly graffiti from four sites along Atlantic Avenue that were defaced by vandals.

Richmond Hill Block Association President Wendy Bowne, members of the Richmond Hill Block Association and the John Bowne High School ROTC, 102nd Precinct Community Affairs Officer Jose Severino, and other area residents joined forces to make Richmond Hill a better place. A little more than 20 people came out Saturday to tackle the graffiti plaguing portions of Atlantic Avenue.

“Not only was it great that we had so many volunteers, it was wonderful to see the local merchants that cared enough to donate all the supplies and pizza for the volunteers,”  Bowne said.

Terrance Bittan, the assistant manager of Ozone Park’s Home Depot on Rockaway Boulevard, donated the majority of the supplies needed for the event; and Devi Ram, of the Executive Driving School on Atlantic Avenue, donated seven pizzas to feed the hungry volunteers after the hours of hard work. Liberty Avenue True Value and New Royal Supply Inc. also generously donated paint supplies.
