Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday signed into a law a bill sponsored by Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) that makes it easier for New York military veterans to access information online.
Cleared in the Assembly and State Senate in March, the new law requires the Division of Veterans’ Affairs to post contact information for each State veteran home on its website, veterans.ny.gov. According to Assembly records, the purpose of the legislation is to ensure that veterans are aware of their option to utilize the State-operated facilities.
“This bill makes it easier for veterans and their loved ones, caretakers, and community to get access to vital services throughout New York State,” Pheffer Amato said. “Previously, the website only provided contact information for veteran service-linked offices and for the United States Department of Veterans’ Affairs Medical Centers.”
The new law was the first sponsored by a freshman assemblymember of the Class of 2017 to pass the lower chamber, Pheffer Amato noted.
“As state and federal governments move to streamline services so we can improve service time and quality for those who have sacrificed so much, I am proud to make this modest, but important contribution,” she added. “I appreciate my Assembly colleagues, Speaker [Carl] Heastie, and Gov. Cuomo for recognizing the urgency of providing vital information to our veterans. I look forward to making those who have served a high priority throughout my tenure in Albany.”
