“Need continues to grow in the ongoing pandemic, and with rising economic insecurity, so many are bracing for increasingly tough decisions. In times of great need, however, Queens always pulls through, and we are in this together,” Lee said. “If you are able, please consider donating new, warm coats—either for adults or children—as the Borough of Families gears up for the winter months ahead.”
Lee also noted that the coat drive overlaps with the ongoing King’s Toy Drive at Borough Hall benefitting children battling cancer, hosted in partnership with the King Fights Cancer Foundation and the family of 7-year-old cancer survivor King Singh of Queens Village. Residents can donate new, unwrapped toys through Friday, Oct. 30.
The donations will be distributed amongst children fighting cancer in the hematology and oncology units at Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, as well as children undergoing treatment at NYU Langone Medical Center in Manhattan and families supported by the Candlelighter’s NYC Childhood Cancer Foundation.
“The remarkable strength and sense of community King Singh and his family possess are inspirations to all of us in the Borough of Families,” Lee said. “Please consider following his generous example and donating a new toy today to support the many children like King courageously fighting this insidious disease.”
“Stay strong and positive. Never give up,” King Singh said. “You can do anything you put your mind to.”
Diagnosed with cancer at just 2 years old, King Singh has spent years not only fighting his disease, but supporting fellow children going through similar battles. His tireless activism has included numerous toy drives, as well as raising $3 million for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Borough President Lee presented her first proclamation to King on Jan. 24, 2020, declaring it “King Rudolph Singh Day” in the Borough of Queens.
