Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato (D-Howard Beach) plans to honor her late friend next month by hosting a free mobile breast cancer screening clinic at the woman’s Rockaway Park dance studio.

The American Italian Cancer Foundation’s Care Clinic will be parked outside Mrs. Elaine’s School of Dance (112-20 Beach Channel Dr.) on Friday, March 24, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Elaine Freeburg, a local dance instructor and studio owner affectionately known as “Mrs. Elaine,” died last year of sudden-onset breast cancer, according to Pheffer Amato.

“My hope is that, by providing a means for women to detect breast cancer early, we can prevent as many tragedies as possible,” the assemblywoman said. “Dedicating this screening is my own small way of helping honor the legacy of a selfless, beloved member of our community who was taken way too soon. This is a disease that can usually be detected early, and when it’s detected, the outcomes are better. I encourage as many women as possible to come out on March 24th to get screened. It’s free, and it’s a great way to ensure your health!”

Candidates who wish to participate must sign up by Friday, March 3, and:

be female, aged 40+ with health insurance; or female, aged 50+ with or without health insurance

be currently living in NYC

not have had a mammogram in the past 12 months

There are no co-pays or deductibles for use of the clinic, said Pheffer Amato. To sign up, call the assemblywoman’s office at (718) 945-9550; or the American Italian Cancer Foundation at (877) 628-9090.
